In modern society, the way we smell is almost an obsession. In the United States alone, citizens spent between $25 and $30 billion on fragrances and perfumes in 2009, according to the New York Times. Now, it’s completely normal to want to smell good – but this statistic moves from staggering to scary when you start to consider all of the toxins and carcinogens that perfume companies put in their products. That’s potentially $30 billion spent on making people smell better at the cost of our health. Of course, it doesn’t have to be this way, and that’s where some of the organic, sustainable, healthy alternatives that I offer at Living Earth Beauty come in. But before I tell you more about them, let’s take a look at what commercial deodorant use is actually doing to our bodies, and why is so important not to do battle with your body and it’s scent, but instead work in harmony with it.
Your Body’s Natural Scent
Bodily scents are naturally created when the glands of the skin make and secrete sweat. This sweat ends up mixing with the wide variety of living organisms that inhabit the surface of the skin, most notably cornyebacterium, staphylococcus epidermis, and propionibacteria. These break down the larger components of sweat (anything that isn’t water or electrolytes), and produce small molecules such as butyric acid, propionic acid, and isovaleric acid. The particular mix of bacteria that live on your skin, and therefore the combination of small molecules that are made, are determined mostly by your diet and secondarily by your genes. They can then be further influenced by diseases, skin conditions, or any medications you’re taking.
Modern perfumes, deodorants, and anti-perspirants work by doing one of three things:
- Killing all the good bacteria that lives on the skin.
- Covering the skin in artificial chemicals and metals, like aluminum, that are toxic to your health.
- Clogging the sweat glands themselves, which can be very damaging.
Luckily, there is an alternative! This is where Poetic Pits by Living Libations comes in.
The Better Alternative
Every bottle of Poetic Pits is made entirely out of an alchemical blend of essential oils. At the heart of each of these blends is sandalwood essential oil, which comes from a very unique tree and offers a huge list of benefits. Here is my article on the benefits of Sandalwood Essential Oil.
And the best part is, since it works with your skin’s natural oils and secretions, each blend produces a unique scent depending on who’s wearing it. The more you sweat, the better it smells.
Here’s a video of Ron from Living Libations to tell you a bit more about it:

That’s Poetic Pits – currently the best choice for giving yourself a truly natural and amazing scent while actually enhancing your overall health.

I believed in the power of essential oils but wondered if the poetic pits would actually work out for me. I was already using natural deodorants and wanted to try this out to see if it actually worked with my body chemistry. I am totally in love with the lavender poetic pits, I admit I bought this one because it was the cheapest one as they are quite expensive. It works, I actually can smell it all day long and it really does get “stronger” as you sweat more. It did take a short detox period from the old deo I guess which also happened when I first switched to natural deodorants in the first place. I am a fan for life and love these, try it and you will not be dissapointed.
